Staying Grounded in Uncertain Times

This is a tender and unsettling time for many of us across the world. It makes sense if you’re feeling shaken, distracted, or emotionally pulled by what’s happening around you. In moments like these, grounding becomes not a way to disconnect from reality, but a way to stay present within it.

Staying grounded doesn’t mean we aren’t impacted or that we turn away from what’s unfolding. It means we choose to respond with intention rather than being driven solely by fear or reactivity. Grounding allows us to remain connected to ourselves, our values, and our capacity to care—for ourselves and for others.

Our nervous system plays a central role in this process, and it begins in the body—particularly in the gut. The foods we eat provide essential nutrients that become the building blocks for neurotransmitters, which help the brain process information and regulate emotions. In many ways, the body fuels the brain, and the brain guides how the body responds to the world.

When the brain perceives danger or threat, it shifts us into an arousal or survival state. In this mode, systems like digestion slow down, making it harder for the body to absorb and use the nutrients it needs. This is why tending to the body—through nourishment, rest, and gentle regulation—is not a small thing. It is foundational to helping the nervous system return to balance.

In times of uncertainty, even small acts of care can help restore a sense of stability. Supporting your body supports your nervous system, and supporting your nervous system supports your ability to move through this moment with clarity, compassion, and resilience.

You’re not meant to carry this alone. Be gentle with yourself, and remember that grounding is a practice—one breath, one choice, one moment at a time.
